Marco de Canaveses | Caldas da Rainha | 17.10.18 - 30.07.21
Phases From Sensibility To Ambiguity

N17, 24' Collection

"Marco de Canaveses | Caldas da Rainha" is a photographic series by Inês M. de Freitas that documents a journey of personal development and emotional reflection between October 2018 and July 2021. The photographs capture moments of introspection and the search for an internal refuge, confronting the emotional disorder caused by cognitive overload and accumulated tensions. Each image is a visual testament to the memories and stories that shape the artist's identity, illustrating physical and emotional wear as symbols of growth and transformation.
Through intimate lenses, Inês reveals the raw and melancholic beauty of the places that marked her life, such as her grandparents' house in Marco de Canaveses. The series showcases the deterioration and resilience of structures and objects, highlighting the connection between past and present. Inspired by her own experiences and the need to find meaning in the simplicity of everyday life, the artist uses photography as a tool to understand the complexities of the human condition, encouraging viewers to reflect on their own journeys of self-discovery and renewal.

Artist's Message

Emotions often conquer the shelter we build around our broadest thoughts, saturated with stimuli, appealing to reflection and marking the beginning of a journey. A journey of personal development. A journey that courageously and curiously seeks meaning in the internal debate between the raw material stored in this deep refuge and the dysfunctional emotion triggered by cognitive overload and accumulated tensions.
Imprisoning realities and ignoring the process creates sick thoughts over time. Without pruning, the structure impoverishes. Trimming the branches at the wrong time can even be fatal, but when done correctly, it prepares the tree for the next spring. The wear imprinted on old shoes tells the stories and adventures of the trails traveled in so many other journeys. Organizing thoughts, wandering aimlessly, reflecting in a safe and isolated place. Washing ideas over and over, hanging them to the wind, and letting them dry in their own time.
The pieces that are lost leave a memory in the void. Letting go of parts of the past and sculpting elements of our identity is the solution to moving forward. Photography intimately allows real forms to be given to complex discourses. Here, it is used as a tool for understanding human subjectivity. It analyzes and evaluates emotions in their transparency. Images that previously resisted definitive interpretation can finally be understood in phases.
It is difficult for me to face what remains of the place where I grew up and my grandparents' house. It used to be called "Lugar do Poço" because there were many springs, always lots of running water. A disorganized and free nature. My grandmother lived in the garden, my grandfather in the yard, and I in the open field on constant excursions.
When I went to college, I tried to blend in. Do what people do in the city. Find my peers. I found refuge in beaches and parks near the center.
